A SLICE OF ENGLAND

Why do we call ourselves “England’s Cheddar makers”? Well, firstly because we’ve been making Cheddar for so long – 150 years and more. And secondly, because we love our home country, its traditions, quirks and peculiarities. Here are a few of our favourites.
We love the rain
Even here in England, we joke about the rain. But at Wyke, it’s one of our favourite things because it’s the rain that makes the lush grass in our county of Somerset, and the lush grass is the reason our milk is so creamy and our Cheddar and butter so delicious.
We love cricket
Trying to explain cricket is the hardest thing you’ll ever do, but it’s also unique. Along with another great sport, tennis, it’s the symbol of the English summer – slow, relaxed and best taken with good food and drink. Cricket also reminds us of our own county of Somerset, which is one of England’s greatest cricketing counties – just ask a cricket fan about Ian Botham or Marcus Trescothick.
We love Sir David Attenborough
The great natural-history film maker is one of England’s national treasures, a presence on our screens for 70 years, bringing knowledge of the world into our homes in the most soothing tones. He’s also one of the country’s greatest environmental campaigners, raising awareness of our need to look after the planet and to give back as much as we take. As one of Europe’s most sustainable businesses, this is incredibly important to us at Wyke.
We love queuing
Like all English people, we like queuing because it’s polite and considerate and because it’s “fair play”. But it also reminds us of the patience required for anything good – including making our Cheddar the best it can be. We’re not ones for short cuts at Wyke.
Most of all, we love English food
Roast beef, fish & chips, Lancashire hotpot, Cornish pasties, clotted cream – let’s face it, English food wins when you’re after satisfaction. But, as the world has come to realise, we’re also pretty good at the subtle things – and, of course, our cheese ranks with the very best in the world. At Wyke, we believe that Cheddar is one of our nation’s greatest inventions, a timeless food that’s as English as wellies and roast beef, or a cup of tea or queuing. We’re proud to have played our part in a tradition that’s reached around the world, from our dairy here in Somerset.
