Somerset Climate

Fortunately we live in the heart of Somerset, where nature has created the ideal environment for dairy farming. All the year round, warm moist air blows in from the North Atlantic and the grass keeps growing to feed our cows even over Christmas! In Summer, we sometimes complain about the rain that it brings, but this keeps the grass lush and green when in other areas of the country it may be drying up.

Soil fertility is enhanced by the manure from our cows, making the grass grow faster and greener. When the cows eat this lush pasture, they produce yet more milk for the cheese and more manure for the ground. We call this natural cycle of fertility, the 'Somerset Cycle'.

Our herd is our greatest asset and we know the cows by name. They are conscientiously cared for by Dave Clothier, who learnt from his father and grandparents the importance of keeping happy cows. Dave is a firm believer that farming is a part of the local ecosystem and encourages wildlife such as deer and lapwings along the banks of the River Brue which runs through the Wyke valley. Naturally all of our cheese is suitable for vegetarians and is GM-free. We steadfastly continue to practice natural and sustainable farming, just as our ancestors have in Wyke Champflower for hundreds of years.
